...About AMAC SP-BOFOR
Ohrid, the tourist center of
Macedonia, the town both a museum and treasury of cultural and historical heritage, is known world wide by its rarities, natural beauties and its splendid lake Ohrid. It is true that this pearl of Nature can only be compared with the Lake Baikal and the Lake Titicaca by its transparent and clean water, its endemic flora and fauna, as well as by its size and depth. The town of Ohrid and the Lake, located in south-west of the Republic of Macedonia, are also known by the sailing sport.
Currently, the "AMAC SP-BOFOR" Boat Club is being sponsored by one of the most successful companies in Macedonia. It guarantees that the Club, which has a very rich and long history, will continue the sailing tradition of a rare and attractive sport.
We, as members and the management of the Club, are well aware that with our activities we pay our debt to that rich tradition but this sport, simultaneously, will be developed by us as our pledge for generations to come.
The Club rich history began in the distant 1937 when a few enthusiasts established it under its original name of "STRMEC" (after the wind that the blows in this region only). Their energy and commitment were so strong that they managed to maintain the Club in life even during the World War II. These enthusiasts began with a small fleet of wood made sailboats. Later developments had made the Club to have its own sailboats construction workshop, where the first certified Olympic class "Jola" sailboat was constructed.
After the WW II, the first "Stela's" were introduced in 1956, when sailing started to be one of the most dominant sports practiced in Ohrid and when three-day regattas called "Around the Lake" took place.
The boat Club, as many other ones, had its upward and downward trends.
In 1978, the Club was modernized by supplying new fiberglass sailboats ("Lasers" and "Optimists") and the traditional Ilinden Regatta was resorted. The club participated in and hosted many national sailing championships and international regattas in which many boat clubs from the former Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey, Hungary, Romania, Italy, etc...took place.
In 2003, the traditional Ilinden Regatta- 100 years of Macedonian Stateship was organized by the Club. So far, it was one of the greatest regattas with more than 100 sailors from Macedonia and the neighboring countries sailing on winds that all sailors could dream of.
Many activities have been planned to be implemented, including a new hanger relocation and construction, fleet modernization, a new modern sailing school establishment , organization of and participation in many regattas (of parade and international nature).
A sailboat (simple and remote controlled) model making section is also planned to be established. Our planning also includes several publications and books of educational nature to be printed out.
